Aztreonam is the first totally synthetic monocyclic β-lactam antibiotic that displays a high degree of resistance to β-lactamase degradation. It has high specificity for gram-negative aerobic rods.
Aztreonam specifically targets the penicillin binding protein 3 (PBP-3) of Gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective against such Enterobacteriaceae as E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Providencia, Salmonella, Serratia, Shigella, and Yersinia species.
Soluble in DMF and DMSO; slightly soluble in ethanol and methanol; practically insoluble in toluene, chloroform and ethyl acetate.
