Description: Members of the class-III pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family, such as AGXT2, catalyze the conversion of glyoxylate to glycine using L-alanine as the amino donor. AGXT2 protects from asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA)-induced inhibition in nitric oxide (NO) production. Elevated blood concentrations of ADMA, a methyl derivate of the amino acid arginine and an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase, is produced by the physiological degradation of methylated proteins and is found in association with diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure and atherosclerosis. AGXT2L2 (alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase 2-like 2) is a 450 amino acid pyridoxal phosphate that exists as a homotetramer. Belonging to the class-III pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family, AGXT2L2 localizes to the mitochondria and exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms. Encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 5q35.3, AGXT2L2 may have similar functions as AGXT2.

Description: MSY2 and YB-2 (MSY3,4) belong to the Y-box family of multifunctional proteins that regulate both transcription and translation (1–3). Y-box proteins interact with a wide variety of nucleic acid structures to act as transcription factors and mRNA masking proteins (1). The modular structure of Y-box proteins includes a highly conserved N-terminal cold-shock domain (CSD, equivalent to the bacterial cold-shock proteins) and four basic C-terminal domains containing arginine clusters and aromatic residues (4). MSY2 is expressed in testis and ovary where it may repress translation of parental mRNA (5,6). The gene encoding human MSY2 maps to chromosome 17p11.2-13.1 (5). YB-2 (MSY3,4 in mouse) is also known as DNA binding protein A and is highly expressed in the testis, heart and muscle (7,8). MSY2 and YB-2 bind to the consensus sequence 5'-UCCAUCA-3' contained in the Y-box element (9).

Description: FUSIP1 is a member of the Serine/Arginine (SR) family of splicing factors. Members of the SR family all contain one or more RNA recognition motifs (RRM) and an SR-rich domain. SR factors are not only essential for constitutive splicing but also regulate splicing in a concentration-dependent manner by influencing the selection of alternative splice sites. Expressed in a variety of tissues with low expression in kidney, liver and heart, FUSIP1 localizes to the cytoplasm and nuclear speckles. In its dephosphorylated form (occurring during M phase of the cell cycle), FUSIP1 functions as a potent general repressor of pre-mRNA splicing and can interact with U1 SnRNP 70. In its phosphorylated form, FUSIP1 interacts with Tra-2∫ and, together, they may cooperate in the regulation of splicing. Four isoforms exist for FUSIP1. In neurons, FUSIP1 isoforms may act to either positively or negatively regulate alternative splicing.

Description: Hemagglutinin (HA) is a class I viral fusion protein from Influenza virus. It is a major glycoprotein, comprising over 80% of the envelope proteins present in the virus particle. HA binds to sialic acid-containing receptors on the cell surface, bringing about the attachment of the virus particle to the cell, and is responsible for penetration of the virus into the cell cytoplasm by mediating the fusion of the membrane of the endocytosed virus particle with the endosomal membrane. The extent of infection into host organism is determined by HA. In natural infection, inactive HA is matured into HA1 and HA2 outside the cell by one or more trypsin-like, arginine-specific endoproteases secreted by the bronchial epithelial cells. The HA protein is a homotrimer of disulfide-linked HA1-HA2. It also plays a major role in the determination of host range restriction and virulence. Genetic variation of hemagglutinin and/or neuraminidase genes results in the emergence of new influenza strains.

Description: This protein belongs to a family of Zn-containing metallocarboxypeptidases specific to C-terminal lysine and arginine residues. It circulates in plasma as a zymogen with molecular weight of 55 kDa (401 amino acid residues; pI 5.0). Being activated by thrombin-thrombomodulin complex during blood coagulation, it exerts carboxypeptidase activity. Activated carboxypeptidase B2 removes C-terminal lysine residues from fibrin, which is necessary for plasminogen binding to fibrin. This prevents plasminogen from activation into plasmin and retards the lysis of a fibrin clot. The concentration in plasma of healthy people is 5-10 ug/ml. High plasma levels were found in patients with stable angina pectoris and angiographically verified coronary artery disease. Elevated concentration in blood is considered as a risk factor for venous thrombosis. A deficiency might contribute to the severity of bleeding disorders in hemophilias A and B, and decreased levels are found in chronic liver disease.

Description: C1orf77, also known as Friend of PRMT1 protein, is a 248 amino acid protein that plays an essential role in the ligand-dependent activation of estrogen receptor target genes. C1orf77 is tightly associated with chromatin and is modified by both asymmetric and symmetric arginine methylation. Depletion of C1orf77 results in almost complete block of estradiol-induced promter occupancy by the estrogen receptor. Also, complete knockdown of C1orf77 mRNA in adult erythroid progenitors stongly induces fetal hemoglobin, suggesting that C1orf77 is a critical modulator of _-globin gene expression. There are two isoforms of C1orf77 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events. The gene encoding C1orf77 maps to human chromosome 1, the largest human chromosome spanning about 260 million base pairs and making up 8% of the human genome. There are about 3,000 genes on chromosome 1, and considering the great number of genes there are also a large number of diseases associated with chromosome 1.
