Defects in Fumarylacetoacetase cause tyrosinemia type 1, which is congenital metabolism defect characterised by elevated levels of tyrosine in the blood and urine, and hepatorenal manifestations. Typical features include renal tubular injury, self-mutilation, hepatic necrosis, episodic weakness, and seizures.
