Description: DZIP1 (DAZ interacting protein 1) is also known as DZIP or DZIP2 and is a 867 amino acid protein which is expressed as three isoforms, designated DZIPb, DZIPt1 and DZIPt2. DZIP1 is localized to testis, oocytes, ovary and fetal brain, as well as in embryonic stem cells and germ cells. In testis, DZIP1 is localized to the nucleus and also shows some cytoplasmic distribution in spermatogonia. DZIP1 belongs to the C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, and, characteristc of the C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, DZIP1 contains one C2H2-type zinc-finger region through which it is thought to interact with DAZ, an interaction that promotes spermiogenesis. DZIP1 expression is not found in those afflicted with Sertoli cell-only syndrome (characterized by the absence of germ cells in the testis), suggesting that the lack of DZIP1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of Sertoli cell-only syndrome-induced male sterility.

Description: TRIM36 (tripartite motif-containing 36), also known as RNF98 (RING finger protein 98), HAPRIN (haploid germ cell-specific RBCC protein) or RBCC728, is a 728 amino acid protein that belongs to the TRIM/RBCC (Ring finger, B box, coiled-coil) family. Predominantly expressed in prostate, testis and brain with weak expression in heart, kidney and lung, TRIM36 contains two B box-type zinc fingers, a SPRY domain, a coiled-coil domain, a fibronectin type-III domain and a RING-type zinc finger; a motif that has zinc-chelating activity and is involved in mediating protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. Localizing to the cytoplasm and the acrosomal region of germ cells and mature sperm, TRIM36 is believed to play a role in the acrosome reaction and fertilization. In addition, TRIM36 is overexpressed in prostate cancer, suggesting a possible role for TRIM36 in prostate tumorigenesis.

Description: Zinc is an essential cofactor that is involved in cell growth and development, as well as in protein, nucleic acid and lipid metabolism. The transport of zinc across the cell membrane is crucial for correct enzyme and overall cell function. SLC39A11 (solute carrier family 39 (metal ion transporter), member 11), also known as ZIP11 (Zrt- and Irt-like protein 11), is a 342 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein belonging to the ZIP transporter family. Expressed as multiple alternatively spliced isoforms, SLC39A11 acts as a zinc-influx transporter and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 17, which comprises over 2.5% of the human genome and encodes over 1,200 genes, some of which are involved in tumor suppression and in the pathogenesis of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, early onset breast cancer and a predisposition to cancers of the ovary, colon, prostate gland and fallopian tubes.

Description: EGF response factor 1 is a zinc-binding protein encoded by the immediate-early response gene, Zfp-36. TIS11B, a relative of TTP, localizes to the nucleus and may function as a transcription factor involved in regulating the growth factor response. It is an evolutionarily conserved protein containing two C3H1-type zinc fingers and a repeating cys-his motif. TIS11B is an mRNA binding protein and is known to interact with the 3’-untranslated region of VEGF mRNA, thereby decreasing its stability. This suggests that TIS11B is a potential target in antiangiogenic therapy. In addition, TIS11B may also be an important regulator of myogenesis, as its expression is upregulated during murine myoblast differentiation.

Description: ZNF672 is a 452 amino acid nuclear protein that may be involved in transcriptional regulation. Belonging to the Kr_ppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, ZNF672 contains 14 C2H2-type zinc fingers. ZNF672 exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms, and is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 1q44. Human chromosome 1 spans 260 million base pairs, contains over 3,000 genes, comprises nearly 8% of the human genome, and houses a large number of disease-associated genes, including those that are involved in familial adenomatous polyposis, Stickler syndrome, Parkinson?s disease, Gaucher disease, schizophrenia and Usher syndrome.

Description: Zic2 is a C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor that influences forebrain development. Zic2 is a transcriptional repressor and may regulate tissue specific expression of dopamine receptor D1. Zic2 transcript is abundant in the dorsal neural tube/spinal cord, and in the hindbrain. A polyhistidine tract polymorphism in this gene may be associated with increased risk of neural tube defects. This gene is closely linked to a gene encoding zinc finger protein of the cerebellum 5, a related family member on chromosome 13.

Description: Aminoacylase 1 is a cytosolic, homodimeric, zinc binding enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of acylated L amino acids to L amino acids and acyl group, and has been postulated to function in the catabolism and salvage of acylated amino acids. ACY1 has been assigned to chromosome 3p21.1, a region reduced to homozygosity in small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and its expression has been reported to be reduced or undetectable in SCLC cell lines and tumors. The amino acid sequence of human aminoacylase 1 is highly homologous to the porcine counterpart, and ACY1 is the first member of a new family of zinc binding enzymes.
